In Foundation Stage, children are assessed against the Foundation Stage Profile.
The profile consists of 20 items of information: the attainment of each child assessed in relation to the 17 Early Learning Goals descriptors, together with a short narrative describing the child's three characteristics of effective learning.
For each descriptor, your child's teacher will judge whether they are meeting the level of development expected at the end of Reception year (expected), exceeding this level (exceeding) or not yet reaching this level (emerging).
The EYFS profile supports future curriculum planning and will provide the Year 1 teachers with important information about each child's approach to learning.
Assessment in Years 1,3,4 and 5
In Years 1-6, children are now assessed against age-related expectations (ARE). At the end of Year 2 and Year 6, assessments will be made (including statutory tests) and children will be judged as 'working at the expected standard' for the year group (expected), working beyond the expected standard (greater depth) or working below the expected standard (working towards).
In Years 1,3,4 and 5, children's progress is monitored using our assessment tracker (SPTO). At regular intervals, children are assessed by their teachers (using evidence in their books, knowledge of the children and test data). The assessment tracker divides the year into three terms. During Term 1, children should have completed approximately one-third of the curriculum objectives and so are recorded as their year group low e.g. for children in Year 1, this will be Yr 1 Low. During Term 2, they should have completed two thirds of the curriculum objectives and so are recorded as their year group mid e.g. Yr 1 Mid and by the end of Term 3 should have completed all curriculum objectives and are therefore recorded as their year group high e.g. Yr 1 High.
These judgements are supported by #1,2,3 or 4. This describes their depth of learning. So, for example, where children are working at the expected standard for the term, they will be recorded as #2. Yr 1 High #2 indicates that a Year 1 child in the third term is working at the expected standard. If a child is judged to be working slightly beyond the expected standard, they will be recorded as #3. If they are judged to be working significantly beyond the expected standard, they will be recorded as #4.
At Progress Meetings with your child's teacher and on any reports, you will see judgements recorded in this way for Maths, Reading, Writing and Science.
